Welcoming a new baby to the family is a joyous occasion celebrated in different ways around the world. In Indian culture, the family celebrates by hosting a special baby shower to bless the mother-to-be with the abundant happiness of motherhood. It is easy to see the beauty of this custom in these lovely photos of Nandita’s Indian baby shower, shared with us by Cavin Elizabeth Photography. The shower took place at Nandita’s parents’ home in La Jolla, California. Keeping with tradition, Nandita began her day by dressing in a sari, a bindi and bangle bracelets while her female relatives prepared a party for her downstairs. When the mom-in-waiting made her debut, guests raised up their arms and cheered in her honor, and the bangle ceremony began! The bangle ceremony is an important part of Indian baby showers — the female guests bestow the mother-to-be and her child with good wishes by putting bangle bracelets on her arms. “Each female guest of the shower completed a number of traditions, including placing flowers in Nandita’s hair and slipping a few bangles on her arms,” explained Cavin Elizabeth Photography. “From first timers to the more experienced, each woman played a part in the bangle ceremony.” It is truly stunning how this traditional ceremony brings women together to honor the rites of motherhood and the family-female bond.
