It’s not every day that we get the honor of sharing a wedding day that’s 16 years in the making, but thanks to this New York City celebration shared by Kelly Williams, Photographer, today has become one of those rare occasions. Having been together and madly in love with each other since meeting at Oakland University almost 2 decades ago, holding off on marriage was a challenging, but deeply personal decision for the couple. Aldrin explained, “People always asked us if we were ever going to have a wedding ceremony. We made a decision to wait for marriage to become legal in New York state before we had a ceremony. We knew we wanted to be together forever, but we wanted the legal rights that come with our state recognizing our marriage.” Finally, on July 24th, 2011, their dream finally became a reality — New York passed legislation for same-sex marriage, so it was time these two to tie the knot! Their wedding day took place that The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers, a sleek venue perfectly nestled by the ocean, and reflected their personalities with modern and simplistic decor choices. Everything revolved around creating an event that was all about honoring their love and having a fabulous time…and to make that happen, they designed every detail themselves! For the festivities, Aldrin and Mike wore matching navy suits, made especially by Enzo Custom Clothiers, but showed off their own personal flair with mismatched ties from The Tie Bar. The reception that followed their ceremony was as equally as stylish and sophisticated and their outfit choices. Throughout the window-filled room, neutral decor blanketed the room with a sleek, modern feel while navy accents added unique pops of color and character to the design. Although many couples tend to let traditional decor pieces, such as flower arrangements and the wedding cake, take center stage at the reception, Aldrin and Mike’s soiree took a refreshing turn. The couple chose understated flowers and a cupcake display over an intricate cake so they could shine the spotlight on food that spoke to their heritages (Aldrin has roots in the Philippines and Mike has a long Latino ancestry). They collaborated with designer Yuen Hom on custom-made paper details. The invitations were seriously breathtaking, as were the monogram-sealed dinner menus and table numbers! However, the best part of this candid celebration was definitely the dance floor. When the lovebirds weren’t showing off their moves, the floor was packed with friends and family members having the time of their lives. It may have taken 16 years for this day to come for Aldrin and Mike, but nothing was going to keep these two from enjoying the best day of their lives!
Congratulations, Aldrin and Mike!
